The history:More than a century old now, Carl House had its 1903 beginnings as a private residence and ornamental plant nursery. It is an authentic piece of historical Georgia, lovingly preserved for current and future generations to enjoy. Current Carl House owners BB and Tom Webb have transformed it into a spectacular gathering place that is now on every North Georgia bride’s “must see” list.
The owners:
BB Webb is an entrepreneur, artist and businesswoman. With a background in theatre, she has an eye for what is original and creative. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Marlboro College and a graduate degree in performance from The Ohio State University; she studied intensively with theatre legend Tony Montanaro. Over the years she has honed both her marketing and business skills to enable the birth of multiple creative projects and new businesses. In 1990, she wrote, produced, marketed, and performed in her own one-woman play, Through Ruby's Eyes, which she toured nationwide. In 2002 she saw an opportunity with what is now “Carl House,” to bring together her various skills by creating, with her business partner Tom, a full service event facility which could utilize her theatre background, leadership, marketing and sales smarts. After completely renovating this 100-year old antebellum home, they added a ballroom and a third floor, and had the grounds professionally landscaped. Barely four years off the drawing board, BB has built a million dollar company with 8 full time and 25 part-time staff members.
In 2005 and 2006 Carl House was named by Gwinnett Magazine as the “Best Place to Get Married” and the “Best Place to Have a Business Meeting or Retreat” in Gwinnett County. Also in 2006, Carl House was named as ‘Best Reception Site’ by Atlantabridal.com and voted in the ‘best of’ category by The Knot magazine. In September 2006 BB Webb was awarded the 'Results Count' award of Atlanta Women in Business during the 'Crossing Bridges' international businesswomen's luncheon at the Crown Plaza Atlanta Perimeter. She also hosts a successful television show ‘Living Life with Style’ and a radio program entitled ‘Right to the Heart with BB Webb,’ highlighting the talents of interesting people making a difference in and around Georgia. Carl House would have had no beginning without BB’s original partnership with her then husband, Tom Webb. Tom was the incredible design mind for the house and the gazebo. While respecting the historic integrity of the home, Tom specialized in recreating the look and feel of the original house by finding old materials and fashioning woodwork to emulate the period of the original house. Both the ballroom and the third floor are newly built though look as though they were a part of the original structure. He also miraculously secured the necessary financing for the renovation and start of the company. BB expresses eternal thanks for his participation in her dream and all they learned in their fascinating journey together.
